WRAPPED, DYED, & WOVEN: A CELEBRATION OF SHEILA HICKS

Wrapped, Dyed, and Woven: A Celebration of Sheila Hicks explores the rich history of weaving practices from around the world, experimentation in textile design, processes of weaving and dying, and the role of color in fiber arts.

KickstART Saturday, 10 am–noon
Hands-on activities and demonstrations for kids and families presented by the Omaha Weavers and Spinners Guild and Handweaver’s Guild of Lincoln. See spinning, felting, weaving, and more!

Public Lecture: “The Power of Cloth” @ 1 pm
Omaha-based weaver Mary Zicafoose presents a collection of stories from the lives of artists and weavers, juxtaposed with powerful images and inspirational threads taken from the vast trunk of world textiles.

Panel Discussion: “Voices and Perspectives in Textiles” @ 2:30 pm
A conversation among various artists who, like Sheila Hicks, manipulate threads. Participants will discuss tradition and innovation in textile design, as well as consider various techniques for working with fiber, including weaving and dying. Panelists include Layna Bentley, Agneta Gaines, Camille Hawbaker, and Jay Rich.

Celebratory Reception @ 3:30 pm
Following the presentations, guests are invited to enjoy a cash bar reception and assorted desserts. Music provided by Sophia Potter, cello, and Amanda DeBoer Bartlett, voice, will weave strings and voice, performing classical duets and new works by living composers.

Admission is free to the day’s events, however, guests wishing to view the special exhibition “Sheila Hicks: Material Voices” must obtain a ticket ($5 for general public adults from 10 am to noon during the morning KickstART Saturday event; $10 for general public adults after noon).
