Friday, August 26th, 2016 — all day projects organized across the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro.
Organized by the United Way of the Midlands, the Day of Caring is an annual volunteer service event open to individuals and teams of volunteers in Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties. Participants help local non-profit agencies by stocking food pantries, painting, gardening, doing light repair projects or assisting clients. Since its inception in 2001, UWM’s Day of Caring has promoted the spirit and value of volunteerism, increased the awareness of local agencies and demonstrated what people working together can accomplish. Volunteers receive a first-hand look at the services provided by the non-profit organizations in our community. Nonprofits have an opportunity to share their mission and to complete various projects.Schedules

The summer exhibit at Omaha Children’s Museum, Pirates and Mermaids: Voyage to Creature Cove, brings together several community partners to create an immersive world of marine adventure. The exhibit, sponsored by Mutual of Omaha and Baxter Suburu, opens Saturday, May 28, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 4. To allow visitors more chances to explore the exhibit, for the first time ever, the museum will be open on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting June 6. Pirates and Mermaids is an interactive environment for large motor play for young children, featuring a 40-foot wooden pirate ship where children can walk the plank into a ball pit sea and climbing nets for lookout points. Among the biggest attractions are the five large animatronic prehistoric creatures throughout the exhibit, including a massive megalodon and octopus. Children will explore natural history through hands-on activities with authentic fossils related to the creatures.

Approach Climbing Gym
1/2 Price Admission
On Saturday, August 27, Approach, Nebraska’s first commercial gym dedicated entirely to climbing, will celebrate it’s 1-year anniversary by hosting an all-day special event featuring professional athletes, a “Climbing Fitness Challenge,” and ½ price admission. Local music (Michael Fitzsimmons), live DJ (Brent Crampton), food trucks (Johnny Ricco’s Brooklyn Pizza and Prairie Fire Pizza), craft beer (Farnam House Brewing Co.), product demos (by FrictionLabs and Five Ten), and a raffle with climbing gear prizes round out the fun-filled day. Approach, in partnership with adidas Outdoor, is proud to present Pro Climbers Chelsea Rude and Jon Cardwell for a feature presentation at 8:00 P.M. on the sport of climbing followed by Q & A sessions. Rude, who is currently ranked top 10 in the world for both sport climbing and bouldering, will lead a presentation on the “Allure of Climbing.” Cardwell will recap his climbing journey on Biographie at Ceuse in France. Biographie (aka Realization) is one of the most famous sport climbs in the world and only 13-climbers have completed the project with Cardwell being the most recent in 2016. Pre-ceding the presentations will be a meet and greet and poster signing at 7:00 P.M.
The “Climbing Fitness Challenge” from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. is open to all ages and free to enter for Approach Members or with paid admission (½ price Anniversary Day Pass & Rentals).
