Omaha Firefighters Prepare Families Ahead of Fire Prevention Week – The Omaha News

By Myah French OMAHA, Neb.- With Fire Prevention Week set to begin next week, Omaha firefighters are using the time leading up to it to remind families of the small steps that can save lives.

Connecting With the Community

Fire Prevention Week is a national campaign focused on fire safety, but for crews at Offutt Fire Department, it’s also a chance to connect with local families.

“Fire Prevention Week is important for several reasons. It’s a reminder to us who have already learned as children on what to do in fire, what we should be doing in our homes. And it’s also good for the young children to find out what they need to be doing, not to be scared, and to have a plan for fire if they should encounter it,” said Firefighter Logan Clark.

From school visits to fire station demonstrations, firefighters say the week is about making lessons simple, especially for children.

Teaching Kids Safety Basics

For Captain Ryan Berney, preparing children is a key focus.

“We like to tell parents, even with the kids — hey, what’s your address? What if something happens and you need to call 911? You need to know your address and who to contact.” Firefighters say showing kids what to do in an emergency helps reduce panic and ensures families can act quickly in a crisis.

Small Habits Make a Big Difference

While Fire Prevention Week is filled with drills and demonstrations, Omaha firefighters stress that safety starts at home with daily habits. They encourage families to test smoke alarms, keep flammable items away from stoves, dispose of grease properly, and clean out dryer vents. Having a fire extinguisher ready and accessible can also make the difference in an emergency.

Fire Prevention Week officially begins on Sunday, Oct. 6. Firefighters are urging families not to wait, check your smoke alarms, review your escape plan, and talk to your kids about what to do in case of a fire.
