First-time college tax filers urged to avoid common mistakes ahead of April 15 deadline – The Omaha News

OMAHA, Neb. — As tax season approaches, college students filing independently for the first time may find themselves navigating more questions than answers.

Accountant Aaron Hill said many first-time filers make avoidable mistakes that can delay refunds or create unnecessary stress.

“The most common mistake I see first time filers make is, for one, they like to avoid filing taxes in general. Whatever you think you’re avoiding, the IRS already knows, they’re just waiting for you to admit to what they know on your behalf. ” Hill said.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, frequent errors include entering incorrect Social Security numbers, selecting the wrong filing status and submitting returns without required forms. Even small mistakes can slow processing times and delay refunds.

“I usually go get individual help from somebody that does taxes. ” said Fernando Viallanueva a University of Nebraska at Omaha student who recently filed taxes for the first time.

Hill said education-related tax documents, including tuition statements, often create confusion for students unfamiliar with available credits or deductions. Understanding eligibility can significantly impact refund amounts.

For those uncertain about the filing process, free tax preparation assistance is available. By calling 2-1-1, taxpayers can be connected to local services, including preparation assistance offered at area libraries.

Hill advises first-time filers to double-check documentation, verify filing status and seek professional or community assistance if they are unsure about their eligibility.

The federal tax filing deadline is April 15.
