News: Beef host Horsemen Friday night

Idaho Horsemen @ Omaha Beef

April 19th – 7pm CT

Liberty First Credit Union Arena

After a two-week bye, the 2-0 Omaha Beef are looking to extend their winning streak to 15 games as they host the Idaho Horsemen at Liberty First Credit Union Arena Friday night. The Beef were supposed to play last Saturday in Enid, Oklahoma against the Oklahoma Flying Aces, but the game was postponed until May 25th. The Horsemen are 0-2 in National Arena League play, losing to the Carolina Cobras twice. Idaho defeated the Las Vegas Kings 59-6 on Monday in a non-league game.

The Beef offense led by quarterback Tommy Armstrong continues a strong run game as they have averaged 121 yards per game, 37.5 yards better than the second ranked team. Armstrong, who leads the team and NAL with 136 yards and six rushing touchdowns, averages 68 yards per game. Tabyus Tabor is second on the team with 71 yards (35.5 avg/game). Armstrong has connected on 51.5 percent of his passes for 259 yards and five touchdowns for a pass efficiency rate of 115.6. Jordan Barton leads the Beef receivers with seven receptions, but rookie Korrell Koehlmoos leads the team with 131 yards and three touchdowns. Koehlmoos is second in the NAL with his 21.8 yards per catch and is third in yard per game (65.5). Through two games the Beef have the highest scoring offense (49.5 ppg) and best total offense (239 ypg).

Omaha’s defense has seven sacks, three interceptions, and one fumble recovery in the first two games of the season. Rodell Rahmaan (2), Dylan Pettway (1.5), Zion Farmer (1.5), Rudy Ngougni (1), and Darryl Pointer (1) have recorded sacks for the Beef. Chris Perry and Trey Dudley-Giles, second and third in Beef history in interceptions, have made picks this season. Perry now has 17 in his seven season with Omaha, while Dudley-Giles has 16 in five seasons. Both trail Donate Jones who had 20 in three season (2002-04). Defensive back Ponce Deleon, 2nd in NAL in average tackles per game with 9, leads the team with 18 tackles. Pettway and Terrance Jackson Jr each have 11 for the Beef.

Idaho is led by quarterback Adam Schaffer, who went 17 for 33 for 184 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, in the home game vs Carolina. Schaffer also rushed nine times for 67 yards and three touchdowns. He did not make the trip with the team to Carolina as DeVond Blair Jr filled in for him. The two quarterbacks are the top two leading rushers for the Horsemen as they have carried the ball 15 times while the rest of the team only have eight carries in two games. Timothy “James” Oats filled in at quarterback this past Monday vs Las Vegas.

The Horsemen have six players with at least two receptions. Kyler Henson is leading the team with eight receptions for 73 yards and 1 touchdown. Rashad Flanders has five receptions for 47 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Stokes has the longest catch of the year with a 42-yard catch has caught 3 passes for 90 yards and one touchdown. Rashad Flanders is the main kick returner for Idaho as he has returned 10 kickoff returns for 221 yards (22.1 yards per return) and has 1 MFG return of eight yards.

Linebacker Brennyn Dunn is Idaho’s leading tackler with 17, while Sam Moala (14 tackles), Taeson Hardin (11 tackles), and Dorian Hardin (10 tackles) are right behind him. Raymond Alexander (six tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFL), Rashard Budd (7 tackles, 1.5 TFL), and Wyatt Johnson (three tackles, 2 QBH) are the defensive linemen helping the third best defense against the run allowing 66 yards per game. The pass defense is ranked fifth in the NAL giving up 172 yards per game. Rashad Flanders has the only two interceptions for the Horsemen.
