Omaha Bakery Uses Too Good to Go App to Cut Down on Food Waste  – The Omaha News

By Mo Al-Ebadi OMAHA, Neb.- Every night, bakeries and restaurants across the country throw out food that they don’t sell. In Omaha, one local business is trying to change that.

The Cookie Company at Westroads Mall has joined a growing number of businesses using Too Good to Go, an app that helps restaurants sell leftover food instead of tossing it. The platform lets businesses post “surprise bags” of unsold items at closing time for a fraction of their regular price.

Owner David Fell said the idea came from home.

“I have a daughter who’s really into sustainability, and I’d read an article about Too Good to Go helping restaurants in bigger cities,” Fell said. “I thought it was a wonderful idea and reached out, and it worked out.”

Fell said the app gives his bakery a simple way to cut waste while still covering the cost of food that would otherwise be thrown away.

“I don’t think there has to be food waste anymore,” Fell said. “Wherever there’s food, there are people who want it, and Too Good to Go helps connect the two.”

A Too Good to Go “surprise bag” from The Cookie Company costs about five dollars and can include a mix of cookies, cinnamon rolls or other pastries that didn’t sell that day.

Fell estimates the program saves several dozen cookies and pastries each week. What once ended up in the dumpster now goes home with customers and helps keep a long time Omaha bakery running efficiently.
