OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha community gathered at Baxter Arena for another year full of family fun, supporting a good cause in the process.
The First Responders Foundation hosted its fifth annual “Guns and Hoses” charity hockey game on March 15 at Baxter Arena, featuring a matchup between local firefighters and police officers. The event, which raises thousands of dollars each year, continues to grow in both attendance and community impact.
Foundation president Todd Sears said the event not only supports important initiatives but also highlights the people behind the uniforms.
“It’s a great way for the first responders to be seen and appreciated,” Sears said. “I would think we’re on an upwards trajectory.”
New this year was a ‘Kids Zone’, offering family-friendly activities such as balloon animals, airbrush tattoos and opportunities to meet popular cartoon characters. While the event provided entertainment, its mission remained clear: supporting veterans and their families while enhancing public safety.
On the ice, the competition was just as intense as the cause was meaningful. CJ Harding, a University of Nebraska Omaha police officer who played for Team Blue, said the rivalry stayed friendly despite the physical play.
“Nothing like a little bit of friendly pushing and shoving, but we’re all teammates at the end of the day,” Harding said.
Team Blue ultimately secured a narrow 3–2 victory, showcasing a surprisingly high level of skill among participants.

Sears noted that many first responders already have experience with the sport.
“I was surprised when we started this. There are a lot of first responders that play,” Sears said.
While Team Blue took home the trophy, the event emphasized unity over competition. Organizers say the real win comes from community support and the funds raised for those who serve.
The First Responders Foundation encourages community members to get involved through donations or future events. The next “Guns and Hoses” game is scheduled for March 14, 2027.
