Omaha meal prep services grow as demand rises after pandemic – The Omaha News

OMAHA, Neb. — Meal prep and delivery services are continuing to expand nationwide, with local businesses in Omaha reflecting a broader shift in how consumers access prepared meals. 

More than 28 million users have subscribed to meal kit delivery services, many through subscription models, according to industry data (Accio, n.d.). The global meal kit delivery market is projected to reach $65.67 billion by 2031, with additional estimates placing it at $58.94 billion by 2033. In the United States, the market alone is expected to exceed $11 billion (Accio, n.d.).

That growth has extended into local markets, where businesses say changing routines and post-pandemic habits have influenced consumer demand. 

Busy schedules and an increased focus on convenience and nutrition are among the factors contributing to the rise in meal prep services. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for prepared meal options has remained elevated. 

Clean Slate, an Omaha-based meal prep service, is one of several businesses operating in the local market. 

“We saw a big boom in this kind of in the post-COVID world,” Clean Slate owner Dylan Thompson said. “There was more demand for your time and not spending all your time grocery shopping, preparing and cleaning—but still wanting good food.” 

The meal prep industry includes both national companies and smaller local providers, each competing for a share of a growing market. While larger companies often rely on scale and subscription models, smaller businesses may emphasize customization or direct customer interaction.

Chef Elizabeth Wallace said some customers seek out services that can accommodate specific dietary needs. 

“We focus on a lot of dietary restrictions, so we know these people and their needs,” Wallace said. “When we take those extra steps to make sure someone has no dairy or has a soy allergy, we really like to take care of them in that aspect.” 

As the industry grows, increased competition is shaping how companies operate and differentiate themselves. Analysts project continued expansion, though the long-term trajectory will depend on consumer demand, pricing and competition within the market.
