Organized by the United Way of the Midlands, the Day of Caring is an annual volunteer service event open to individuals and teams of volunteers in Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties. Participants help local non-profit agencies by stocking food pantries, painting, gardening, doing light repair projects or assisting clients. Since its inception in 2001, UWM’s Day of Caring has promoted the spirit and value of volunteerism, increased the awareness of local agencies and demonstrated what people working together can accomplish. Volunteers receive a first-hand look at the services provided by the non-profit organizations in our community. Nonprofits have an opportunity to share their mission and to complete various projects.Schedules

The exhibit, sponsored by Mutual of Omaha and Baxter Suburu, opens Saturday, May 28, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 4. To allow visitors more chances to explore the exhibit, for the first time ever, the museum will be open on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting June 6. Pirates and Mermaids is an interactive environment for large motor play for young children, featuring a 40-foot wooden pirate ship where children can walk the plank into a ball pit sea and climbing nets for lookout points. Among the biggest attractions are the five large animatronic prehistoric creatures throughout the exhibit, including a massive megalodon and octopus. Children will explore natural history through hands-on activities with authentic fossils related to the creatures.
