WEST COAST SWING DANCE LESSONS AT BUSHWACKERS – The Omaha News

By Riley McCall Omaha, NE- A unique dance style is captivating locals at Bushwackers, and it’s no surprise that participants are falling in love with it. The popular venue explores how one instructor shares her passion for West Coast Swing.

Colorado native Michelle Benham has had a love for dance nearly her entire life, and for the past 17 years, she has been bringing that passion to Omaha. Her latest focus is West Coast Swing, a dance form rooted in the 1940s but which has evolved to match today’s fast-paced country music rhythms. Dancers at Bushwackers glide along to the beats of artists like Keith Urban, Devan Cole, and Niall Horan.

Benham, who has been a dancer for nearly half of her life, now teaches West Coast Swing every Wednesday night at Bushwackers, sharing her enthusiasm and expertise with the community.

“I want them to basically get outside themselves and enjoy the social aspect,” Benham says, highlighting the inclusive nature of her classes.

Teaching alongside her is Harish Kommineni, a longtime friend and dance partner. Together, they aim to inspire others to embrace the style and joy of West Coast Swing.

“We’ve been working with her for quite a while,” Kommineni says, “and it’s great working with Michelle.”

West Coast Swing Wednesdays have garnered a loyal following, with 322 members in their Facebook group. These enthusiasts participate for both fun and competition, showcasing the growing appeal of the dance in Omaha.

Bushwackers holds West Coast Swing lessons every Wednesday at 6 PM for the remainder of the year. The schedule will return to 8 PM in January after Halloween and Christmas events wrap up.
