LINCOLN Neb. — Under the blue lights of Pinnacle Bank Arena, Bennington made history.
The Badgers captured the first state basketball championship in school history with an 11-point victory over Gretna East, capping a postseason defined by composure, effort and a community that never stopped believing.
The road to the title ran through chaos.
Norris entered the state tournament as the top seed, having beaten Gretna East twice during the regular season. But in the semifinals, the Griffins flipped the script, knocking off the favorite and reshaping the bracket.
The upset ignited belief.
“We’re gonna win this because we have the best coach in the state, we have the hardest working players,” a Gretna East student section leader said before the championship game.
That confidence carried into the title matchup but Bennington had plans of its own.
An Atmosphere Bigger Than Basketball
From the opening tip, it was clear the night would be about more than just the final score.
Student sections stood throughout the game. Young fans held handmade signs. Parents leaned forward with every possession. Bennington fans clapped in rhythm, setting the tempo inside PBA. Gretna East answered chant for chant.
“On nights like tonight it’s more than just basketball, it’s hometown pride, bragging rights and judging by the noise in this crowd, neither team was willing to give an inch,” reporter Joe Sutton said from courtside.
The energy never dipped.
Steady When It Mattered Most
On the floor, Bennington never flinched.
Even as Gretna East threatened, the Badgers stayed composed. And in the final moments, Macie Reiner delivered the exclamation point, cleaning up a second-chance opportunity to seal the game.
When the final horn sounded, the scoreboard confirmed it: an 11-point championship win.
Players gathered at center court as the emotion settled in. Hugs followed. Tears mixed with smiles. Months of preparation and years of building culminated in one defining moment.
For Bennington parent Chris Redmond, it was personal.
“I’ve known these girls since they were really young, obviously my daughter the longest but I see the hard work they put in and it’s exciting to see them achieve their goals,” Redmond said.
A championship trophy was raised. The same voices that echoed through the arena all night celebrated alongside the team.
Under the lights at Pinnacle Bank Arena, it became about more than one game. It became about a program reaching a milestone and a community witnessing history.
A New Challenge Ahead
The victory also closes a chapter.
With the championship, Bennington finishes its time in Class B on top. Next season, the Badgers move up to Class A bringing championship expectations and momentum into a new challenge.
For Gretna East, the run to the title game proved the Griffins belong on the biggest stage.
For Bennington, the night ended with something it had never claimed before.
A state championship.
