A standing-room rock show tonight, then two Sunday choirs

If Slowdown is covering the club side of the weekend, the rest of the metro’s live music is split between a sold, standing-room rock show tonight and two very different Sunday afternoons: a 350-voice Carmina Burana at the Holland, and a free community chorale across the river.

Times and prices below come from the organizers’ own pages, checked Friday evening.

Tonight: The Calling at Matchbox

The Calling plays Matchbox Omaha at the Holland Performing Arts Center, 1200 Douglas St., at 8 p.m. Ticket Omaha lists floor general admission at $39 ($34 plus $5 fees) and gallery reserved seating at $60 ($55 plus $5 fees). The ticket page is explicit that general admission is standing room only, so pick the gallery if you want a seat.

This is the band behind “Wherever You Will Go,” in a room built for people who want to be close to the stage. There is no age policy stated on the Ticket Omaha event page.

Sunday at 2: Carmina Burana at the Holland

Sunday afternoon, the same complex hosts something much larger. The Omaha Symphony’s Choral Collaborative performs Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at 2 p.m. at the Holland Center, with resident conductor Ernest Richardson. The symphony says a 350-person choir of high school singers joins professional soloists and the orchestra, including students from Bellevue West, Millard South, Creighton Prep, Millard North, Bennington, Fremont, and OPS Mini Singers.

Translations of the sung text will appear on a screen above the choir. If you cannot get there, KVNO 90.7 is carrying the live broadcast. The official concert page does not list a ticket price, so use the symphony’s own ticket path rather than a number you saw somewhere else.

Sunday in Council Bluffs: a free chorale, then the community band

If you want Sunday afternoon without a ticket hunt, Southwest Iowa Chorale’s fall concert is at 2 p.m. in the Frank Fauble Theater at The Arts Center at Iowa Western, 2700 College Road in Council Bluffs. The Arts Center calendar marks it “Free admission!” and lists the window as 2 to 3:30 p.m.

The Community Band fall concert follows in the same theater from 4 to 5 p.m. The calendar describes the concert but does not say it is free, so we are not calling it that. If you stay from the chorale, confirm price at the door or box office (712.388.7140).

How we would do it

Tonight if you want a loud, standing rock show: The Calling, and decide floor vs. gallery before you buy. Sunday if you want the big choral hit: Carmina Burana at 2, and check the symphony directly for tickets. Sunday if you want Iowa-side and free: the chorale at 2, with the option to linger for the community band at 4 once you know what that one costs.

These dates are on our Tonight, This Weekend, and Free calendars. For the club lineup the same weekend, see our Slowdown guide.
