Moo at the Zoo Goes Virtual in 2020

For the first time, join Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium for a virtual Moo at the Zoo experience online, Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31. 

In partnership with Midwest Dairy, Moo at the Zoo is an annual agricultural-themed event held at the Zoo to kick-off National Dairy Month in June. Due to the coronavirus crisis this year, the virtual celebration is occurring on the Zoo’s social platforms throughout the event weekend. 

A new virtual field trip video will be posted each day to help bring the farm and Zoo to viewers following along at home. Participation is free and each virtual field trip will focus on a different topic connecting life on the farm to life at the Zoo. Virtual field trip topics include:

• Friday, May 29
  • Top Notch Animal Care: Not Just a Zoo Standard
    • With help from Farmer Sevastian, Dr. Aaron, and Holly Fujon at Prairieland Dairy, as well as hoofstock keepers Josh Shandera and Kelly Goodyear from the Zoo, we will take a peek into daily animal care operations. You will learn the similarities in the way farmers care for dairy cows and how zookeepers care for giraffes.
• Saturday, May 30 
  • Domestic Animals and Zoo Education
    • The Zoo’s very own Dr. Lee Simmons, as well as Kim Clark from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, will teach us how the care for domestic animals has led to the advancement in care for exotic animals.
• Sunday, May 31
  • Environmental Sustainability and Why it Matters
    • Stephanie Huettner from the Zoo, Rick Koelsch from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and Farmer Sevastian from Prairieland Dairy give us the inside scoop on how the Zoo and dairy farms are each doing their part to enforce environmentally sustainable practices during everyday operations.

An event scavenger hunt is also available on the Zoo’s website at OmahaZoo.com/Special-Events. Participants can post their scavenger hunt photos in the comment section of the daily videos on the Zoo’s social media or on Instagram using #MooAtTheZoo2020 for a chance to win a prize pack courtesy of Midwest Dairy and the Zoo. Photos must be posted by midnight on Sunday, May 31, 2020 to qualify for a chance to win.
