The burger is not the bill: the $15 lunch math at Stella’s and Dinker’s

If your lunch budget is $15, a burger's menu price is only the starting point. The useful comparison between Stella's in Bellevue and Dinker's in Omaha is not a borrowed "best burger" ranking. It is what happens when you want fries, and what is still missing from the total.

We checked the restaurants' own posted menus. This is menu arithmetic, not a taste test, and the amounts below are food subtotals before tax, tip and drinks. An undated online menu is not a price guarantee; confirm when ordering.

At Stella's, cheeseburger plus fries reaches $15 before the extras

Stella's online menu lists a cheeseburger at $9.75 and Stella Fries at $5.25. Ordered as those two listed items, that is $15 before anything else. A $15 all-in ceiling therefore does not fit that order once tax is added.

The hamburger is listed at $9, which puts hamburger plus fries at $14.25 before tax, tip or a drink. This is why changing the burger alone does not create much breathing room.

For a parent ordering for a child under 12, the menu has a different structure. Its $7.50 kids' cheeseburger meal includes a choice of side and a small drink. That is not the adult cheeseburger price with a smaller label attached; it is a bundle with different inclusions. The restaurant also lists $7 children's hamburger, grilled-cheese and other meal options. Ask about portion and dietary needs directly rather than treating a price comparison as an allergy guide.

Stella's contact page places the restaurant at 106 Galvin Road South in Bellevue. This story is about ordering, not a second retelling of the reopening announcement.

At Dinker's, chips and a fries substitution are different prices

The menu image currently linked on Dinker's own website lists a cheeseburger at $8.50. Its burger section says burgers come with potato chips and a pickle. It lists $3 to substitute fries, which makes the cheeseburger-with-fries order $11.50 before tax, tip and drinks.

Do not automatically add a separate full fries order when comparing the two menus. Dinker's separately lists small and large fries; those are not the same menu instruction as substituting fries for the included chips.

The same menu tells customers to order at the back counter and says the restaurant is cash only. Those are more useful first-visit details than repeating an award or a star rating. The address printed on the restaurant's menu is 2368 S. 29th Street, just off Martha Street.

Decide on the order, not a headline price

For the two cheeseburger-and-fries orders above, the posted food-subtotal difference is $3.50. That does not establish equal portions, equal wait times, or a winner on flavor. We have not eaten these orders for this report.

What it does establish is a practical plan: at Stella's, a $15 food subtotal leaves no room in that figure for tax or a drink; at Dinker's, the posted fries substitution changes the comparison materially, and you need cash. If you are feeding a child, compare Stella's bundled children's meal with an actual children's order elsewhere, not with an adult burger alone.

Bring a little more budget than the headline number, check the current menu when ordering, and leave the "best" argument for a meal someone has actually tasted. More original local food reporting lives in Dining.
