By Bayleigh Koch OMAHA, Neb.- The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s School of Communication is launching a new way to help students get ahead on graduate school. The Fast Track program, recently adopted by the school, allows undergraduates to take graduate-level classes that count toward both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Administrators and students say the program is innovative, cost-saving, and gives students the confidence to continue their education.
Dr. Sharon Storch, graduate program chair in the School of Communication, said the decision to bring Fast Track to the program came after seeing its success across campus.
“It’s so student-friendly,” Storch said. “Students can dip their toes into grad school, use their electives, and get a taste of higher-level learning while staying within financial aid. They’re essentially a whole semester ahead by the time they start their master’s.”
The School of Communication officially adopted the program in 2024, making it one of the newest departments at UNO to offer the opportunity. Students can apply up to nine graduate credits while finishing their undergraduate degree, helping them save both time and money on their path to an advanced degree.
Stephen Pura, a UNO undergraduate studying communication, said the program has helped him stay motivated and financially secure.
“My biggest benefit is just being ahead of the curve,” Pura said. “Saving money is the biggest thing, and the more I can save, the better. I don’t have to take a break between degrees — I can just keep rolling through.”
UNO Dean of Graduate Studies Juan Casas said the program is designed for students who have completed at least 60 credits and maintain a 3.0 GPA. He emphasized that beyond the savings, students gain a smoother transition into advanced coursework.
“It saves money, it saves time, and it gives them confidence in managing graduate-level coursework,” Casas said.
The School of Communication’s adoption of Fast Track marks a new phase of growth for the program, giving students a chance to explore graduate-level education earlier in their college careers. Storch said faculty are excited to see how the program continues to develop and benefit students, both in Omaha and through hybrid options that connect learners nationwide.
