Drink of the Week: the Arak Sour

Arak, also known as Middle Eastern anise-flavored spirit, is a unique and flavorful ingredient that can be used to make a variety of cocktails. One of the most popular Arak cocktails is the Arak Sour, which is made by combining Arak with lime juice, simple syrup and a splash of orange blossom water. To make an Arak Sour you will need:

  • 2 oz Arak
  • 3/4 oz lime juice
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • 1/4 oz orange blossom water
  • Orange twist, for garnish

In a shaker, combine the Arak, lime juice, simple syrup and orange blossom water. Shake with ice and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with an orange twist. Arak has a distinct anise flavor, similar to ouzo or sambuca, which is often paired with the sweetness of the lime juice and the floral notes of the orange blossom water to make a delicious and complex drink. It is a good idea to use high-quality arak or arak that is specifically labeled as good for drinking (not all Arak is meant to be consumed as a drink) and be mindful of the quantity of the Arak in the drink as it’s very strong.
