Tara Vaughan

tara

Omaha native Tara Vaughan has been in love with music since she can remember. The 28-year-old musician got her start singing in choirs and playing piano for her local church. Eventually, she went to Tufts University (just outside of Boston) to study music. Fast-forward to 2015 and her life revolves around her blossoming career. This summer, she’s been hard at work in Nashville working on a new album. Although she didn’t have much time before her big show at Slowdown last Friday, August 21, Vaughan was able to briefly answer a few questions about her music and why she still thinks Hanson is the best band ever. Stay tuned for more…

Now! Omaha: Where did you grow up and when did you fall in love with music?

Tara Vaughan: I grew up in Omaha singing in choir and playing piano for church, then went to Tufts University outside Boston to study music.

When did you realize you had a talent for singing, etc?

It didn’t really happen that way; it’s more just that I really like to sing so I hope it doesn’t sound like old cats to everyone else!

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up and why?

Hanson, because they are the truest and greatest artists of our time. I also love the Beatles, a lot of 60s sunshine pop, anything I can shake my booty to.

What do you like writing about in your songs?

Life; songs are how I cope with the happys and the sads.

Where do you think you fit into the Omaha music community?

Somewhere between Adam Stoltenberg and Matt McGuigan.

How do you think your music is perceived outside of Omaha? Do you get nervous playing for new crowds?

I don’t know if I have the self-awareness to know how my music is perceived! That would be pretty trip. I just hope people feel warm, like a newborn seal pup cradled inside a zookeeper’s caring hands. And I definitely get a little nervous playing for new crowds!

Was the Slowdown show a big deal for you or have you played there a lot before?

Both of these are true. I have played there quite a few times, but it’s probably been a couple years since I’ve played there with my band, so we’re really excited to get back there. I’ve been working on a new album in Nashville with Joe Pisapia this summer, and we’ll be playing a lot of new material that we’ve been working on, including some of the songs we’ve recorded.

Who would you love to play with and/or collaborate with if you had your pick?

Hanson. They are honest to goodness dreamboats and I would just giggle myself to sleep forever. Also Ariel Rechtshaid, because he produces a lot of fun, danceable, accessibly 80s inspired songs that I like.

Are you working on any new stuff?

Always.

Where can we find out more about your music?

You can listen to it on iTunes and at taravaughan.bandcamp.com, and once I get my website updated this weekend, you can probably find out some things at taravaughanmusic.com.
