Zoo Partners with the University of Nebraska State Museum For Free Virtual Educational Experience

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is partnering with the University of Nebraska State Museum-Morrill Hall for a free virtual educational experience, “Elephants in America! Past, Present and Future!” on Thursday, November 8. More than 100 registrants have signed up for the program, making up approximately four thousand participants nationwide including 54 counties within Nebraska.

This one-day virtual learning opportunity is free to educators across the country. Viewers will be transported to the Elephant Family Quarters at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and Elephant Hall in the University of Nebraska State Museum-Morrill Hall. The program will compare and contrast fossil finds with modern day proboscideans, taking a deep look at elephant behavior, adaptive features and conservation needs.

“We are very excited to bring students to the Zoo for this unique learning opportunity,” said Dr. Elizabeth Mulkerrin, vice president of education at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. “The virtual learning program is such a great tool for us because we are able to reach classrooms that otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to visit the Zoo. Viewers get special tours of our exhibits and an up-close look at some of our animals, which creates an interactive learning experience without having to leave the classroom.”

“Much like the Zoo, our virtual field trip technology allows students to get up close and personal with exhibit displays. They have experiences the average museum visitor can’t have”, said Dr. Susan Weller, director of the University of Nebraska State Museum. “Participants will go inside the Columbian Mammoth mouth — nearly 14 feet above ground — to examine “Archie’s” teeth and learn about what he ate. Only students on virtual field trips get to do this! We are delighted to partner with the Zoo to provide a look into our great state’s ancient past and connect it to the modern elephants we know today.”

Virtual field trips will be offered at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Programming will last approximately 45 minutes, consisting of 30 minutes of program information and 15 minutes for Q&A.
