Join Us For a Halloween-Themed Lake Cleanup Event!

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium invites the public to join them for a Halloween-themed lake cleanup event on Sunday, October 28 from 12 to 4 p.m. at Levi Carter Park at 4405 Carter Lake Shore Drive West.

Costumes are encouraged at this citizen science event. Exclusive backstage passes to the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium will be given to a costume contest winner and the individual who collects the most trash during the cleanup event. By joining the Zoo in its cleanup initiative, attendees will be making the local watershed a cleaner place, ultimately enhancing our community’s ecosystem.

Throughout the day, Zoo staff will be teaching participants about the qualities of a healthy freshwater ecosystem and easy ways they can help the environment in their own backyards. Attendees can also assist with testing the lake’s water chemistry. Gloves will be provided to those helping with the cleanup.

“We are really excited to engage the community in this cleanup event,” said Elizabeth Mulkerrin, vice president of education at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. “We hope that participants will walk away from the lake with a fun experience and some tools they can use to improve the ecosystems in their own neighborhoods. The lake is shared by both Nebraska and Iowa, so we hope to see both states represented at the cleanup.”

The lake cleanup is part of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s partnership with DiVentures, which focuses on Ocean Health Conservation. Together, the organizations hope to educate and engage the public through conservation-themed activities and events. DiVentures will be sending volunteers to assist with the cleanup.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium worked with Keep Omaha Beautiful to identify an area in need for this free cleanup event.
